Main Duties
Objective:
- To oversee and manage all irrigation-related operations and infrastructure on the farm, ensuring the
- effective and sustainable use of water resources to achieve high-quality agricultural production in a financially efficient, sustainable, and environmentally responsible manner
Key Responsibilities:
Technical
- Provide technical lead on efficient water use projects, including greenhouse farming ,workers kitchen gardening projects, estate upkeep-lawns, dam and reservoir management, wastewater management and technical support on all water works
- Provide technical support to the irrigation team, ensuring optimal water use and the functionality of irrigation systems.
- Manage the maintenance and operational efficiency of all irrigation-related technical equipment, including pumps, furrows, boreholes, and dams.
- Supervise contractors and artisans involved in irrigation projects.
- Develop and maintain irrigation-related budgets, ensuring financial control and resource optimization.
- Conduct assessments and advise on replenishment or upgrades of irrigation-related assets.
- Prepare monthly technical reports detailing completed tasks, ongoing work, and projected timelines for irrigation operations.
Irrigation Management
- Oversee all farm irrigation activities, including water sourcing, system maintenance, and distribution optimization.
- Manage the routine maintenance and improvement of the irrigation infrastructure, such as drip lines, furrows, and water reservoirs.
- Ensure accurate data collection on water supply and demand, including daily measurements of rain, evaporation, and soil moisture levels.
- Plan irrigation schedules in collaboration with the head of farms, prioritizing systematic and ad-hoc needs.
- Lead extraordinary projects related to water use and irrigation.
- Train, assess, and appraise department employees to build a skilled and motivated team.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with stakeholders relevant to water access and furrow functionality.
General Responsibilities
- Continuously evaluate and improve irrigation processes to reduce waste and enhance efficiency.
- Ensure adherence to Rainforest and Café Practice certification standards across irrigation operations.
- Monitor the punctuality and productivity of irrigation labor teams.
- Address unforeseen challenges or changes in duties to ensure the smooth and profitable production of high-quality crops.
Other Requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
- Education: Degree/Diploma in Agricultural Engineering, Irrigation Technology, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in irrigation management, preferably in an agricultural setting.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining irrigation systems.
- Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical components related to irrigation.
- Leadership: Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Problem-Solving: Capability to troubleshoot irrigation system issues efficiently.
- Communication: Proficient in English and Swahili for effective team and stakeholder communication.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects effectively.
